Title: Bio written by Virgil H.B. Lilly, Physician McSherrystown.
The farm Samuel owned was called Eden and there is where he died, aged 59 years. His ashes rest under the Church
of the Sacred Heart, at Conewago; his wife, Anna, also died in Eden, aged 85 years.
They settled on a farm in Lancaster County, which was created from Chester County on October 14, 1728. That part of
Lancaster County became York County on October 14, 1748 and then on January 22, 1800 became Adams County.

CHAPTER XXIX.
CONOWAGO TOWNSHIP AND BOROUGH OF MCSHERRYSTOWN.
Conowago Township is a division of the county that was formed out of Heidelberg
and Manheim Townships in 1801, and organized that year. Was named for the Conewago Creeek. Its original name was
Digges’ Choice, bestowed upon it in 1727. In 1730 the Lillys settled here and gave to it its Indian name, Conewaugha,
"at the place of rapids". The original assessment of Conowago, made in 1801, gives the following list of property owners
and assessed values, together with the names of single men:

HARRY J. LILLY.  (see next sketch below).  The great-great-grandfather, Samuel
Lilly, came from Bristol, England, landing at Philadelphia, Penn., thence went
to Chester County, Penn., but after a short time came to Conowago Township,
Adams County, Penn., (where his great-grand-daughter, Sarah Lilly, still
resides) in 1733.  He was nine months making the trip from England, being
wrecked on the coast of Ireland.  He learned the trade of fuller, in his native
land, and first settled on the west side of Conowago Creek, on account of the
water-power, and erected a factory, which carried on for many years, his son
succeeding him, but which was finally abandoned, as it did not pay, cloth being
manufactured so cheap in Eastern cities.  No vestige of the building now
remains, everything being torn down.  Samuel Lilly, also, operated a feed and
saw-mill, which was replaced by a stone mill.  He entered a great deal of land,
and the homestead he first settled is still in possession of his descendants.
When he first came to this township the Jesuits had the only log church, which
was served once a month by priests, who came from Harford Co., Md.  Indians
still roamed over the forests.  Mr. Lilly was a man of great physical endurance,
and, although not of large size, was undaunted by discouragements or obstacles
that were thrown in his way.  He had several sons and daughters, and one of his
daughters married Dudley Digges, who at one time owned much land around Conowago
Chapel, and was shot by one of Michael Kitzmiller’s boys.  Samuel Lilly’s sons-
Richard, John and Thomas-were mentioned in his will, which was signed by John
Digges, Henry Slagle and Archibald Irwin.  Sarah Lilly, a daughter of Samuel
Lilly, who was a grandson of Samuel Lilly the first, was born October 22, 1800,
and has always resided on the homestead, with the exception of the time she
attended school in Baltimore, and to-day, although she has seen more than four-
score years, she is one of the most sensible ladies in the county; she still
owns several hundred acres of the original homestead, which is farmed by her
nephews, Edgar and John L. Jenkins.  Miss Lilly is a member of Conowago Chapel,
which her ancestors helped build, and is most highly respected by its members,
who are in perfect harmony with all denominations.

When Samuel married Anna Price in Bristol, England, two ceremonies were performed on the same day to celebrate the
union, one by the Catholic and the other by the Established Church.

LIVINGSTON YESTERDAY
****************************
Village of Strawn
By Pontiac Libary

Strawn is situated on the Chicago and Paducah Railroad, about 10 miles south of Fairbury, and was laid out June 6,
1873.  It was surveyed by Alfred C. Huetson, county surveyor, for David Strawn, the original proprietor, and for whom
the village was named.
In order to induce settlers to locate in the village, and in building it up, Mr. Strawn adopted the plan of  giving every
alternate lot to such as would erect houses, under certain specifications, by the 1st of September following its laying
out.  The houses might be as large as the proprietors chose to build but must not fall below certain dimensions.  No
shanties, either as businesses or dwelling houses, were to be erected.
The first business house enclosed in the village was that of E.H. Roberts, who selected the first lot, on the day the
village was laid out.  The first dwelling was erected by John Colfer, now owned by Hampton McCormick, and operated as
a hotel.  About the same time dwellings were put up by L.L. Graves, James Stevenson and Mr. Welch.
E.H. Roberts, now of the firm of Aaron, Roberts & Co. sold the first goods in the village.  His store was opened about
the 1st of July, 1873.  At the present time, there are eight stores in Strawn, also harness shops, grain firms and one
saloon.
Indeed, the village seems to have completely risen about the swamps and marshes where it languished.
The post office was established, Oct. 6, 1873, and E.H. Roberts was appointed postmaster.  The first freight received
at Strawn station was July 1, 1873, and was a barrel of meat for S.K. Mitchell, who kept a boarding house.  The first
shipment of freight was a carload of hogs, and was made by Walter D. Strawn July 7, 1873.
Strawn, like hundreds of other railroad towns and villages, has sprung up in the last few years like a hothouse plant.  It
is, however, a flourishing little place, full of energy and enterprise, and does a large amount of business.  It is increasing
in importance each year, and will soon overtake some of its elder neighbors, unless they rub off the rust of years and,
like Dickens' Little Joe, "move on."

Rita Belle died as a child.  Playing in the road she was hit by a motorcycle and killed.  Think about it.  1930's, rural
Strawn, Illinois, how many cars could there have been traveling that road at that time, let alone a motorcycle.  Mom
always said I could never get on a motorcycle as long as she was around.
